Santa Claus Golf Club
The Golf Club of Rovaniemi – Arctic Golf Finland ry – was founded on the frozen Kemijoki river in 1986. During the first years, golf in Rovaniemi was played in arctic conditions, after the name of the club, at winter golf courses built of snow on the frozen river. Only a few years later, the first summer golf course of six fairways and the practise area was build on Saarenkylä.
In 1997, a new 9-hole golf course was opened in Ounasvaara. Pekka Sivula is the designer behind the original Ounasvaara Golf Park. Lassi Pekka Tilander is the designer of the 9-hole extension that completed the full 18-hole golf course in 2011.
The main season of golf at the Arctic Circle is today summer, but we also enjoy winter golf at the spring time at the winter golf course of Ounasvaara Golf Park. As the golf club of the official Hometown of Santa Claus the name of the club was changed to Santa Claus Golf Club in 2017. Santa Claus Golf Club is one of the largest sports clubs in Rovaniemi. There are about 800 members in the club from 5 year olds to 85.
